Skateboarding Stereotypes
Just because someone skateboards means they are going to break into your home, and rape everyone in your household, and then steal your stuff. Don’t trust a single skateboarder, I’m being serious, they are all in a gang or cult, and they also smoke and do tons of drugs. Not a good role model for kids at all. While all these may be an over exaggeration, why is it we don’t trust a kid with a skateboard? Even the nicely dressed ones? This is skateboarding stereotypes at it’s best.
I was reading on some online forums, and A parent wanted to know if “Skateboarding” was a sin. Skateboarding……a sin? And then he rambled on about how he was going to make sure his kid wore button up shirts and nice pants while he skateboarded and that he made sure he didn’t speak any skater “lingo”. Ok. Cool “Dad”. Skateboarding isn’t a sin, and you don’t need to throw out there that your kid will wear nice clothes and become a “nice” skater. Yes. We understand not every skater we see is clean and wearing the best clothes. But do you see him smoking and stealing and ect.? If you do, it’s your area/neighborhood or just the fact he’s a lost kid. Not every skateboarder smokes weed, steals from stores and looks trashy. And you don’t have to ramble on about how your not going to be the trashy type.
Notice Tony Hawk. He has always been a clean and efficient skater. He has pulled off and invented a lot of tricks, and he doesn’t look like a bum. And if you google “Did Tony Hawk Ever Smoke Weed?” you won’t find the answer your looking for. I skateboard, and I know a few tricks to. But I don’t dress completely trashy, and I don’t smoke pot and I don’t throw my board at the ground every time I get mad. Neither do I rob stores, or rape or anything bad for a matter of fact. I don’t need to point out how I’m going to be a “clean and nice” skater. But I’m not doing all these bad things either. Skateboarding stereotypes are just about as right as any other stereotype out there.

Maintaining Your Skateboard

Skateboards and skateboard parts need to be maintained as much as anything else. And if you don’t maintain it, they won’t work as much as you want them to. You won’t go very fast if your bearings are dirty, you won’t turn very well if you mess up your trucks, and you may never know if a skateboard shop sells you a warped board which affects quite a bit. Yes I understand skateboards get damaged and broken, no big deal, but skateboard parts can be salvaged for the next board. First, in order to tell if a skateboard shop is selling a warped board, pick the board up and look down the tail and nose horizontally. You’ll be able to see and or tell if the wood is warped from this angle, so if it looks unusual or twisted, put the board back and buy something else.

For bearings, there’s a few ways you can clean them out. Constantly take Q-tips to clean the outside and inside, and then if you have it, use air to blow the bearings, but only do this with the bearings OUT of the wheels. If you really want the bearings cleaned and lasting for a long time, buy something that was made to clean it. Most skate shops carry a bearing lubricant to help clean it. You could also use Tri-flow, but be careful using any liquids because they can ruin your bearings if not completely dried. Never use water or WD-40 on skateboard bearings, as this will wear down the bearings and hurt them more then help.  Lets now move on to trucks, a quick tip is to NEVER tighten them until you have worn them in a little bit, tightening your trucks to early may result in your skateboard  going left instead of going straight. If you roll the skateboard straight and it goes left or right, then you know your trucks are damaged in some way. It’s because when you have new trucks, and you tighten them, you crush the bushings which cause the trucks to be unbalanced. So wear your trucks down a little bit before tightening your trucks to your liking.

Also, here’s some quick tips on how to make your skateboard last longer. Find a new way to stop besides using the tail of the board, sliding with the tail of the board actually makes it go away and slowly wear down to a smaller tail, which produces less pop and isn’t as effective.  And when you Ollie, don’t slam your board so hard, slamming it increases cracks and may even snap your board depending on how you landed.

Maintaining your skateboard can be hard at times, it’s like walking the dog

or doing your homework. If you ride your skateboard enough, you got to remember the important things that go with it. It’s not so much a responsibility, but it does have cons to not maintaining the board. The more efficient the board is, the more efficient you are. It took me a long time to realize why I was always bailing on tricks. It’s because when I landed my board would turn. This was the result of me tightening my trucks to tight, right away. I’ve went through most all the problems presented by not maintaining my board. My bearings have completely stopped on me while I was rolling because of the dirt, I’ve snapped new skateboard because of careless Ollies I slammed. And the best skateboard I’ve ever owned has lost most of it’s tail so it has a lot less pop. I’ve gone through a lot of money trying to figure out how to maintain all my skateboard parts and such.

Remember, take the time to maintain your skateboard. Unless you want to buy a brand new skateboard setup every single time you break a board, you might want to maintain older parts so you don’t have to spend so much money.  That and certain parts may be the best you’ve ever had, and to hold on to them might be smart. Also, another great tip is not to chuck your skateboard at the ground when you get angry. That might help a little bit if you tend to do that and are wondering why you constantly have to replace your boards. Just saying. Maintain your skateboard and you should be fine with whatever setup you have.
